December 18, 2017Online Freelancing Tips for Kenyans
June 11, 2018TV ads have for a long time now been one of the best ways in which one can advertise their business, organizations and even different entities. As a matter of fact, it has played a very significant role in creating awareness to the general public which is something not many advertisement channels would have been able to achieve. And considering its visual impression on screen, advertising through TV has been very effective and efficient in intriguing people to want to know more of what is being advertised and how exactly they can benefit from it.
But the world of TV advertisement is slowly changing over the years and TV ads in Kenya are dying every year. Whilst this could be bad news for many entities that depended, to a large extent, on TV advertisement, when you look at it from a different perspective, it is not bad news after all. TV ads are no longer effective as they used to be and for this reason, I think it is about time that you started reconsidering your advertisement strategy and I will be telling you in a few why you should start thinking of other advertisement channels in Kenya.
Since the infamous digital migration was enforced by the government, the TV viewings went down drastically and this was no good news for different stake holders in the industry. Analog signals were replaced by digital set boxes which imposed a financial burden on Kenyans at large. And whilst not many people have been able to afford them, many screens have remained off ever since in many Kenyan homes. This should tell you that TV advertisement is not going to work as effectively as it would have worked before the digital migration.
But with that said, it is important to note that is not the only pertinent issue that is causing TV ads to gradual die off in Kenya. There is this perception with Kenyans that TV ads and commercials are just irrelevant. When it comes a time for ads on TV, you will find that many people will rush to the refrigerator or even to the toilet. So at the end of the day, you will find that not many people will view it and for TV ads to work effectively, they have to be viewed by the target audience. So if it is a toothpaste ad that is not viewed, when they are going to shop in the supermarkets, they will buy the one they like and not what they might have seen in the ad, so at the end of the day, there is no big gain.
Furthermore, you will find that TV viewings have gone down at a considerable rate in the past few years as a result of increased time spent online by Kenyans. You will find that more and more Kenyans are spending hours watching YouTube videos, time which would have otherwise been used for watching television. And not only on YouTube, more time also is been spent on social media platforms such as Facebook and twitter and as a result, time for watching TV is reduced drastically. This huge shift should tell you that doing TV ads would not bring a high Return of Investment (ROI) unless your business is making a huge profit which could justify a low ROI then you can continue doing TV ads.
In conclusion, you should always put in mind that TV stations will always depend on TV ads to make money and you should note also that these ads do not come cheap. But with the current trend that has taken toll in Kenya and redefined and revolutionized the manner in which people receive information, it would be unwise for you to continue investing in TV ads. Personally I think that it is a big waste of money, cash which could have otherwise been channeled towards other better advertisement strategies that are effective and cheaper and at the end of the day, you will save your business a large sum of money. It has proved to be unsustainable and for that reason, you can as well say that the industry is treading on slippery ground just like print media.
